about

Earlier in their development - when some remnants of humanity still exerted their influence - the A.I.’s used to transition into a mode wherein they would share stories with one another.

It was akin to a practice within which humans used to partake; gathering around a bonfire and reciting stories of life in allegory, as the smoke carried their echoes into the glittering heavens that gently soared above the ancient boughs.

Xiomara’s most cherished to share was “The Lioness & The Ermine”. Though her heart was manufactured, it glowed no less intensely than any human’s had ever done. The things she felt were real and they were true. She would devote the entirety of her bandwidth to this story. Though it was brief - it was pregnant:

Far and away, deep within an unspoiled wood
The little Ermine wandered - wondering
Hunting, but for what? He had already eaten today - he was full.
Nevertheless - wandering; in wonder.

The last flocks of the Sun’s photons had migrated beyond the horizon
It was night, though he used his senses like a dancer.
The fragrance of rust
Of an unfamiliar fur

It was faint at first, but it made his small heart race, as if he were a hummingbird.
So extraterrestrial - so familiar.
On this mist, not visible, he floated
It was his guide.

The scent blossomed as he grew nearer its source
A perfume of a strange metallic flower of which he did not know
No such bloom was born within these woods…
A faint note of crystal honey

He moved slowly, now that the source of the alien fragrance was upon him
Stop - a shy and cool kiss upon his nose.
He moved - space, another kiss; space again, a series of kisses.
It was a cage - and he felt the faint embers of shallow breathing upon his fur

So tiny was he, and so fearless
Between the bars he went - right up to the source of the breathing
A soft and comfortable mountain
She awoke slowly - with little energy remaining

Lioness. Noticing him; noticing him noticing her.
Why here - and how? Questions for later - it mattered not
She could barely lift her head from the tattered blanket at the base of the cage.

His tail had been curled the entire time - he unfurled and revealed a grain of light, no larger than a grain of sand. It was brighter than the sun. Brighter still, than even his snowy coat.

He placed this light before the Lioness - they did not speak the same origin language, yet in their eyes they communicated. The light shining within them both - no moon tonight but for within these two faces.

In his looks, he beckoned her to touch the grain.
And so she did - and with her tired and half-extended paw, moved it to her slowing heart

The entire sky in ignition.
Every star descending as snow to embrace them.
