about

The sun had set for some while now, though some of its light remained upon the very fringe of the sky; slowly fading - a warm fingerprint evaporating into the evening.

We had been walking back to the edge of the forest - noble cedars that seemed to stretch upward forever, running their fingers through the hair of the glittering stars above.

It was now quiet and all of the wildlife had settled for the night, with the exception of a few creatures occasionally flitting about the ground-cover in the distance. Their slight reverberations generated a feeling of comfort and familiarity; the delicate warmth of life.

We walked easily with the assistance of the soft amber moonlight. A special occurrence; the fourth, unseen moon had joined its three companions. Such a night would not arrive for millennia to come.

It was a time of great significance. This night we would only be guided by what we could feel within ourselves and within each other. Technology was not forbidden, but with such a resonant silence, we did not require it, and instead recalled what we had long ago learned to sense.

Rising at the very lip of the horizon was the piercing radiance of our home star’s collapsed twin. It spoke a much different tongue of light than its sister. It was a light that warmed the air without being seen. It’s radiance was that of a mirage, tickling and folding the scenery around us as delicately and subtly as an auroral dance.

It was a breathing wind that could not be felt upon the skin, but instead was felt at the edges of the mind. Pausing for a moment, we linked hands and closed our eyes. As the dark star rose, we could not observe it directly. It was not to avoid injury to our physicality but to ensure that we would continue to perceive time without distortion.

Matching our breathing, we began our procession forward. Walking at pace with the ghost-star’s breeze - much like navigating a gentle river - we motioned towards the entrance just beyond the clearing.

With eyes closed; a grand pavilion of clear, electric light emerged before us. As we moved nearer to its glow, it further invited us within. We stopped at the foot of the vast silver plateau, waiting for a moment. Our pathway formed as a perfect string of vibrant white, no more than a hair’s breadth, and just as soft.

As the string reached the edge of the plateau, we took one synchronized step into the threshold. The two of us were immediately as one; no longer within our bodies. We traversed the silver hair and emerged instantaneously at the centre of the pavilion. It’s majesty was beyond communication.

Our gaze was directed toward the circling heavens above. Where the vaulted structure opened, the ghost-star had now centred. Our minds began to quiet and became still; an unending field of perfect glass, somewhere beyond the boundary between infinite light and eternal silence.

We had made our return, and would remain for a light-age before morning’s sugared kiss once more fell upon the brow of our world.
